Frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet

Dysport is a wrinkle relaxer. It calms the muscles that crease your skin when you frown, squint, or raise your brows, so those lines soften and the rest of your face keeps its expression.

Dysport works on lines that come from movement. For lines that stay when your face is at rest, your provider may suggest pairing it with a skin treatment such as Morpheus8 or a chemical peel.

  • Frown lines (the 11s) The two vertical creases between your eyebrows. This is the area Dysport is FDA-approved to treat.
  • Forehead lines The horizontal lines that show when you raise your brows.
  • Crow’s feet The lines that fan out from the corners of your eyes when you smile or squint.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a prescription injectable made from a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, called abobotulinumtoxinA. A small amount placed in a muscle blocks the signal that tells it to tighten, so the line that muscle creates softens.

The FDA approved Dysport in 2009 for moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in adults under 65, and providers also use it on forehead lines and crow’s feet. The effect is temporary. Over about three to four months the muscle’s signal comes back, which is why patients return for maintenance.

Dysport vs. Botox: what’s the difference?

Dysport and Botox are both botulinum toxin type A, and they relax muscle the same way. They’re made by different companies and measured in different units, so they’re priced differently. Dysport is the one we place.

NeuromodulatorActive ingredientFDA-approved cosmetic useUnits
Dysport (what we place)abobotulinumtoxinAFrown lines between the browsIts own scale: a treatment uses more units, and each unit usually costs less
Botox Cosmetic (not offered here)onabotulinumtoxinAFrown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and neck bandsIts own scale: a treatment uses fewer units, and each unit usually costs more

Because the units don’t convert one to one, compare the price of a whole treatment, not the price per unit. If you’ve had Botox or another neuromodulator somewhere else, tell your provider what you had and when. It helps them plan your dose.

We treat the face in front of us, and the system behind it.

At Optimal Health, Dysport is a medical appointment. A licensed medical provider goes over your health history with you and places your injections inside a family and functional medicine practice in Provo. The aim is a softer line that still looks like you.

Preparing for Dysport, and aftercare

Before. Come with a clean face. Tell your provider about the medicines and supplements you take, since aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E can make bruising more likely, and never stop a prescribed medicine without asking the person who prescribed it. It also helps to skip alcohol the day before.

After. Stay upright and keep your hands off the treated areas for about four hours, so the Dysport stays where it was placed. Skip hard workouts, saunas, and hot tubs for the rest of the day. A little redness or a small bump where the needle went in usually fades within hours.

How much does Dysport cost in Provo?

Dysport is priced per unit. How many units you need depends on the areas you treat and how strong those muscles are, so your provider confirms the number with you at your appointment, and you see the total before anything is placed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Dysport cost in Provo?

Dysport is priced per unit, and your total depends on the areas you treat and how much product those muscles need. Call us at 801-877-5801 for current pricing.

Why does Dysport take more units than Botox?

Each product is measured on its own scale, so the units don’t convert one to one. A Dysport treatment uses more units than a Botox treatment of the same area, and each Dysport unit usually costs less. That’s why a Botox price per unit and a Dysport price per unit can’t be compared directly.

Is Dysport cheaper than Botox?

Not always. Dysport’s price per unit is usually lower, but a treatment takes more units. Compare the cost of the whole treatment for the areas you want.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Both are botulinum toxin type A, and both relax muscle the same way. They’re made by different companies, measured in different units, and FDA-approved for different sets of areas. Some patients notice Dysport a little sooner. Dysport is the one we place at Optimal Health.

Can I switch from Botox to Dysport?

Yes. Tell your provider what you had, how much, and when, so they can time your appointment and plan your Dysport dose on its own scale.

When will I see results, and when is Dysport strongest?

Many patients notice a change in 2 to 3 days. The effect keeps building after that, and most patients see the full result at about two weeks.

How long does Dysport last?

About 3 to 4 months for most patients. The effect is temporary: as the nerve signal to the muscle returns, the muscle moves the way it did before, and a maintenance appointment keeps your results steady.

What is the 4-hour rule after Dysport?

For about four hours after your appointment, stay upright and avoid rubbing or pressing the treated areas. That gives the Dysport time to settle where your provider placed it.

Who places the injections?

A licensed medical provider at our practice places every injection. Dysport is booked as a medical appointment through our front desk.

Is 40 too late to start Dysport?

No. Dysport softens lines you already have, so starting later works. Its FDA approval for frown lines covers adults under 65, and your provider goes over your goals and health history with you before treatment.

Who shouldn’t get Dysport?

Dysport isn’t for anyone allergic to any botulinum toxin product, to cow’s milk protein, or to Dysport’s other ingredients, or with an infection where it would be injected. It hasn’t been studied enough in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so tell your provider if either applies, along with any nerve or muscle condition.
